Hands on the work14
Create graphics and animation using computer programs+
Design title-card graphics, character rigs, and background art, then produce a 15-second motion test at 24fps with exported layered assets and a reference playback for review by lead animator Marcus by Tuesday noon.

Convert real objects to animated objects through modeling+
Photograph the physical prop, convert the photos into clean vector shapes, paint textures, and turn the shapes into puppetable assets so the rigging artist Lila can animate them in the next sprint.

Script, plan, and create animated sequences under deadlines+
Draft a shot list, timing sheet, and storyboard panels for the 90-second explainer, then animate a rough cut with key poses and deliver a first pass to director Ana by Friday 5pm.

Assemble, typeset, scan, and produce digital art or film negatives+
Scan the inked frames, clean up linework and fill flats, then assemble a print-ready contact sheet and a digital proof for the colorist and post house to approve before the lab run.

Implement configuration control systems+
Create a versioned asset registry, lock master files, and log change notes so producers can pull any prior iteration and the compositor knows which artwork to bake into the final comp.

Motion graphics+
Create a thirty-second motion graphic for the product launch: animated logo reveal, three kinetic typography scenes with supplied copy, and two lower-third promos; assemble layers so timing can be adjusted and export a high-quality H.264 review file by Thursday.

Edit animation and effects based on feedback+
Apply the director’s notes to the cut: tighten timing at 00:12–00:20, soften easing on the walk cycle, swap the particle layer for the warmer glow, then render a review MP4 and a layered source file for the animator by end of day tomorrow.

Incorporate special effects into set design+
Design the set’s visual comps that incorporate smoke, projected light wraps, and animated signage, then hand off annotated layers and a notes sheet to the set builder so the show lighting can sync with the effects on Friday tech run.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a 2D animator actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You’ll spend most of the day making and editing frames in programs like Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Mornings often start with a team meeting to review deadlines and client feedback, then you build scenes, rig characters, or create motion graphics.

Afternoons usually mean polishing shots, exporting assets to clients or editors as PDFs or PNGs via Adobe Creative Cloud, and updating your project files under configuration control so everyone uses the latest version.

Start with Adobe After Effects plus Photoshop and Illustrator. After Effects is used for animation and motion graphics; Photoshop and Illustrator for drawing and assets.

Also learn Adobe Creative Cloud basics (file sync, Acrobat for sharing), and get comfortable on Apple macOS since many studios use Macs. Knowing one scripting or plugin language like C++ or expressions in After Effects helps but isn’t always required.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, 2025), about 19,970 people work in this occupation. The median pay is $102,030 per year. The lowest 10% earn around $58,600 and the top 10% about $177,110.

Pay varies by industry (film, games, advertising), location, and your role (junior vs. lead). Freelance rates differ and can be higher per project but less steady.

Use AI to speed routine tasks: generate background textures, rough keyframes, or alternative color passes, then refine everything in After Effects, Photoshop, or Illustrator. Treat AI output as a first draft, not a final deliverable.

Keep client approvals and version control: label AI-generated files clearly, keep original hand-drawn or edited layers, and follow studio configuration control so you can revert changes and prove ownership of final art.

A 2D animator draws or rigs flat artwork and animates it in After Effects, Photoshop, or Illustrator. A 3D animator works in 3D packages (not listed above) to move models in three dimensions.

Motion graphics is overlap: if you create animated titles, HUDs, and promotional pieces in After Effects, you’re doing motion graphics. 2D animators often do both character animation and motion graphics.

Have a demo reel that shows timing, clear keyframes, and polished shots made in After Effects plus assets from Photoshop or Illustrator. Include a short motion graphics piece and at least one character or scene with believable movement.

Show you can meet deadlines, accept feedback, export clean files (PDFs or synced Creative Cloud assets), and follow basic configuration control so teammates can open your project without confusion.

Sometimes, especially on film or mixed media projects. Tasks can include designing mechanized props, planning animatronics, or coordinating atmospheric effects like wind or fog to match animated footage.

But most studio 2D animation jobs focus on digital work in After Effects and Photoshop. If a project needs physical effects, you’ll usually collaborate with special effects teams who handle pyrotechnics and set rigs.
