Hands on the work15
Create graphics and animation using computer programs+
Create three 15-second animated infographics explaining the new product features, using provided logos and brand colors, deliver MP4s with alpha where needed, and include a short usage guide for the social team by next Wednesday.

Convert real objects to animated objects through modeling+
Scan and model the ceramic prototype into a clean low- and high-poly 3D asset, bake the texture maps, and hand over FBX and PNG maps with a note on topology fixes by Friday noon for integration in the scene.

Script, plan, and create animated sequences under deadlines+
Write the shot list, animatic timing, and a production schedule for the 90-second sequence, assign two animators and one rigger, and lock story, camera moves, and delivery milestones for review on Monday morning.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a 3D animator actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You usually start by checking feedback from the director and the art lead, then open the scene files in your 3D or compositing tools. Tasks split between modeling (turning a real object into a 3D model), rigging (setting up how it moves), animating sequences, and rendering or exporting frames for review.

Afternoons are often for edits from client notes, testing effects like wind or fog, and meeting the team about deadlines. You’ll use After Effects, Photoshop, or your studio’s 3D package and keep track of versions with configuration control systems.

Start with Adobe After Effects and Adobe Photoshop because many studios use them for compositing and texture work, and they’re common in showreels. Learn basic motion graphics and layer-based compositing in After Effects and image prep in Photoshop.

Next, pick up a 3D package (Blender, Maya, or a studio’s tool). Also be comfortable with macOS if the studio uses Apple machines, and learn simple C++ concepts only if you plan to work on custom tools or pipeline code.

A 3D animator focuses on creating character or object movement and building models that move believably—making a car appear to drive itself or animating an exploding building. VFX artists often handle pyrotechnics, atmospheric effects (rain, fog), and compositing those into live-action plates.

Motion graphics designers concentrate on text, logos, and abstract motion (titles, promos) usually inside After Effects. There’s overlap: a 3D animator may do motion graphics, and VFX artists may animate models for destruction scenes.

AI can speed up tasks like blocking poses, automating lip sync, or generating texture ideas, but it won’t replace craft. Use AI-generated suggestions as a starting point, then refine timing, weight, and realism by hand to match director notes and reference footage.

Be careful about asset ownership and studio policy: don’t push client-provided photos or proprietary models into public AI services. Keep version control and document which assets were AI-assisted to avoid legal or quality issues.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, 2025), 19,970 people are employed in this occupation. The median annual wage is $102,030. The lowest tenth earn about $58,600, and the top tenth earn about $177,110.

Pay varies by industry (film, games, advertising), location, and your role (generalist vs. lead technical animator). Freelance rates and benefits also change the practical take-home; studios often list ranges on job ads.

Employers commonly test your ability to model, rig, and animate believable movement, and your compositing skills in After Effects or similar. You should show polish in timing, weight, and posing, and be able to implement simple effects like wind, rain, or fog.

They’ll also check pipeline awareness: using configuration control, exporting correct file formats, and making small tools or scripts (sometimes C++ or Python) to speed repetitive tasks.

Keep the reel short (60–90 seconds). Lead with your strongest animation shot—clear timing and weight, not long scene setups. Show model turnarounds only if you did the modeling; otherwise focus on animated sequences and finished composites in After Effects.

Include before/after or breakdowns for effects you created (pyrotechnics, atmospheric effects, destruction sims). Note software used (After Effects, Photoshop, any 3D package) and list your exact role on each shot (animator, rigger, effects).
