Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a cad designer actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You usually start by opening current drawings in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or MicroStation and checking updates from engineers. Expect to spend several hours editing 2D blueprints or 3D models, specifying dimensions and materials, and fixing drafting errors.

Afternoon often goes to meetings with manufacturing or engineers to confirm design feasibility, update drawing records in Revit or Excel, and add notes or shaded details for production molds. A supervisor reviews your work before release.

Learn Autodesk AutoCAD for 2D drafting and SolidWorks for 3D electromechanical models; both are commonly required. MicroStation appears in some civil projects and Revit is used when drawings tie into building models.

Also be comfortable exporting files and using Excel to track revisions. Employers list these systems directly, so show project files or screenshots from those exact programs.

Per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), about 39,960 people were employed as CAD designers and the median pay was $71,550 per year. The lowest 10% earned around $48,360 and the top 10% about $106,580.

Use BLS numbers when discussing pay with employers; local wages vary by city, industry, and whether you handle specialized electrical or electromechanical systems.

AI can help generate template text, suggest BOM entries, or convert sketches to cleaner outlines, but never trust it to make final engineering decisions. Always cross-check AI output against the original drawings, standards, and engineer reviews.

Keep a clear record of changes in Excel or your drawing management system, and never let AI overwrite a controlled drawing file without supervisor approval.

A CAD designer focuses on creating detailed drawings and models (2D and 3D) to specified dimensions and materials, often using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit. You usually work under engineer supervision and don’t own the engineering calculations.

A drafter may do more basic drawing work; a mechanical engineer does analysis, selects systems, and signs off on designs. CAD designers sit between those roles: more technical than a drafter but not responsible for engineering certification.

Be able to open and edit drawings in AutoCAD and SolidWorks, check for errors, add dimensions, and save revision-controlled files. Know how to shade or color drawings to highlight details and create production mold drawings.

Also know basic Excel for revision logs, read electrical diagrams, and follow engineering instructions. Employers expect you to update drawing records and collaborate with manufacturing from day one.
