Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a cad estimator actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You spend most of your day opening drawings in AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks and checking measurements, materials, and dimensions against project specs. That means finding errors, adding notes, and positioning instructions on drawings so the shop or field crew knows what to build.

You also update drawing records in Microsoft Office/Excel, run simple quantity takeoffs from the CAD files, and meet with engineers or manufacturing teams to confirm design feasibility and electrical code compliance.

Start with Autodesk AutoCAD and Microsoft Excel; AutoCAD is the most common for 2D drafting and quick estimates while Excel stores takeoffs and cost lists. Learn Revit if projects involve building systems and SolidWorks or MicroStation if the employer is electromechanical or uses those platforms.

Knowing how to open, measure, and export dimensions, and how to place comments or overlays in the drawing, matters more than fancy features at first.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there were 39,960 employed CAD estimators and related drafters. The median pay is $71,550 per year; the lowest tenth earn about $48,360 and the top tenth about $106,580. These figures come from BLS data.

Actual pay depends on industry, your software skills (Revit vs. SolidWorks), and whether you can interpret electrical diagrams and design electromechanical systems.

A CAD estimator focuses on creating and checking drawings, specifying dimensions and materials, and doing quantity takeoffs in CAD tools. An electrical engineer designs systems, calculates loads, and signs off on code compliance. A pure estimator focuses on pricing and bids, possibly without producing detailed CAD drawings.

In practice you collaborate: you update drawings for engineers, check them for errors, and work with estimating teams to ensure design feasibility with manufacturing.

AI can help by auto-extracting text from drawings, suggesting standard notes, or converting PDFs to editable CAD files. Use it to speed repetitive tasks, but always verify dimensions, material lists, and electrical code references manually—AI makes mistakes with measurements and compliance.

Never let AI replace checking drawings for errors or final sign-off. Keep original CAD files, track changes in your documentation, and keep Excel backups of takeoff numbers.

Show that you can open a real project drawing in AutoCAD or Revit, measure distances accurately, add dimensions and notes, and export a simple parts list into Excel. Employers want concrete proof you can check drawings for errors and maintain drawing records.

Mention experience with electrical diagrams or modeling electromechanical systems if you have it, and name the actual software you used (AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, MicroStation, Excel).
