Hands on the work15
Create graphics and animation using computer programs+
Design a thirty-second title animation and lower third package for the promo: build vector elements for the logo, create layered painted backgrounds, animate type and motion paths to match the 0:30 track, export a high-resolution animated comp and deliver a review draft to Creative Director Lina Morales.

Convert real objects to animated objects through modeling+
Convert the photographed props and a scanned wristwatch into fully modeled, textured animated assets ready for rigging, matching on-set scale and surface detail and deliver OBJ geometry plus texture maps by Wednesday for the animation team to rig.

Script, plan, and create animated sequences under deadlines+
Script the two-minute title sequence, schedule storyboards and previs, assign shot owners, and deliver an approved animatic with timecoded notes to VFX production by next Tuesday so we can meet the Friday delivery window.

Assemble, typeset, scan, and produce digital art or film negatives+
Assemble the scanned plates, type the opening credits over the leader, clean the negatives for grain and dust, and export a print-ready high-resolution image sequence for color grading by Monday morning.

Construct and manipulate scale models+
Build scale models of the city block, photograph reference from four angles, and adjust maquette proportions until the director signs off, then hand over dimensioned photos and measurements to the model shop on Thursday.

Implement configuration control systems+
Publish the current asset list, lock approved versions, record every change with rationale and owner, and push the configuration baseline so editorial and animation know exactly which files to pull before tomorrow's dailies.

Manage pyrotechnics for explosions and fire effects+
Plan and authorize pyrotechnic choreography for the explosion plate, map safe standoff zones, confirm charge sizes and ignition sequencing with the SFX supervisor and safety officer, and clear the shoot for the Friday take.

Produce atmospheric effects like wind, rain, fog, snow, and clouds+
Specify atmospheric effect passes for the city sequence—wind rigs, rain density, fog layers and cloud cards—book VFX and on-set crews, run a camera test for visibility, and lock settings before the night shoot.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a compositing supervisor actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You start by checking dailies and the compositing notes from last night — that means reviewing rendered plates and shots in After Effects or Nuke (if used). Mornings often include a shot review with the VFX producer and lead artists to assign tasks and set deadlines.

Afternoons are hands-on: troubleshooting composite problems, approving mattes and rotoscopes, and sending versions back to the editorial team. You also meet with the client's or director's reps to show progress and lock looks before finishing. Expect some late tweaks before final delivery.

Start with Adobe After Effects and Adobe Photoshop — After Effects for layering, keying, and motion graphics; Photoshop for matte painting and texture prep. Learn Adobe Illustrator and InDesign enough to handle simple graphics and client layouts if your project needs print or promo work.

Also get familiar with a node-based compositor like Nuke eventually, and basic scripting (Python or C++) to automate repetitive tasks. Knowing Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D helps if you work on set-accurate environment shots.

A VFX Supervisor oversees all visual effects for a production — they set creative and technical VFX strategy across departments. A Lead Compositor is the top compositor on a sequence who does shots and mentors others. A Compositing Supervisor sits between them: you define compositing standards, manage the compositing team, and ensure shots match the VFX Supervisor's look.

You also handle pipeline items like configuration control systems and render approvals, and you act as the main contact for compositing-related client reviews.

Yes, AI can speed rotoscoping, denoising, and generating matte passes, but treat AI outputs as starting points. Always check and correct edge details in After Effects or Photoshop; AI can hallucinate artifacts or wrong motion edges.

Keep source control of originals and AI-edited files, and document which shots used AI tools. If clients or unions require it, disclose AI use. Don't rely on AI for final decisions about lighting or realism — human eyes and knowledge of the intended camera/plate look must guide the final composite.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for 2025, there were about 19,970 employed in this occupation. Median pay is $102,030 per year; the lowest tenth is $58,600 and the top tenth is $177,110. Pay varies by location, studio size, and credits on your reel.

Freelance rates, overtime, and benefits can shift those numbers. Supervisors at major studios in Los Angeles or New York tend to sit near the higher end.

Show finished shots that prove you can match live-action plates, handle mattes, colour grading, and lens/lighting integration. Include breakdowns: list software used (After Effects, Photoshop, any node-based compositors), your role, and the problems you solved (e.g., cleaned wire removals, added realistic rain and fog).

Keep the reel short (2–3 minutes), start with your best shot, and host breakdowns or layered EXRs to demonstrate technical control. On your resume, list systems you know (Adobe suite, AutoCAD Civil 3D, C++ if you script) and notable directors or studios you've worked with.

Technically: strong rotoscoping, keying, colour-matching, and experience with After Effects/Photoshop; familiarity with render pipelines and configuration control systems; basic scripting (C++ or Python) helps automate tasks. Knowing how to simulate atmosphere (fog, rain, snow) and practical effects gives an edge.

People-wise: clear communication for shot reviews, the ability to give fast, constructive feedback, and deadline management. You coordinate clients, VFX producers, and compositors, so being calm under pressure and organised is critical.
