Adjust text properties such as size and spacing+
Adjust the headline and body text across the film titles to match the art director’s brief: increase headline size to 42pt, tighten character spacing by 15 units, set body to 11.5pt with 2.5pt leading, then export a proof for Cristian by Tuesday afternoon.

Submit final files for printing or online publishing+
Prepare the final print and web-ready masters for the brochure: embed all fonts, convert images to CMYK at 300dpi for offset, create a flattened web PDF at 150dpi, attach print consent form and send both to the print buyer Anna with a Friday delivery window.

Oversee printing jobs and deliver final products+
Schedule the press run for the proof posters, check final colour separations and bleeds against the print spec, approve the press proof, and arrange delivery of 500 posters to the client warehouse by next Tuesday.

Revise layouts and make corrections+
Revise the magazine layout: correct headline kerning, update the product caption copy, run a preflight to catch any missing images, and export a corrected print-ready proof for client sign-off by end of day Wednesday.

Edit graphics, photographs, and illustrations+
Retouch the hero shot to remove dust and stray reflections, rebuild missing highlights on the model, match colour balance to the art direction swatch, and hand over layered source and flattened JPG to design lead by 3pm.

Integrate images and text cohesively+
Compose the product spread so imagery and copy read as one unit, align text blocks to the grid, reconcile image colour with the type palette, and produce a print-ready combined file for the printer today.

Printing techniques+
Prepare a print-ready master for the seasonal brochure: convert colours to the required press profile, set image resolutions to 300 ppi, embed fonts, apply trapping where needed, and export a single layered PDF with bleed and crop marks by Wednesday so print can start Thursday.

Adapt to artists' creative demands+
Resolve the artists' last-minute layout changes for the poster run: accept the new painted header, reflow type to match hierarchy, proof alternate colourways against the press profile, and produce three print-ready proofs for sign-off by the creative director on Friday.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

  • Answer every 'how do I' question you have

It cannot

Questions people actually ask

You spend most of the day arranging text and images so they print or display correctly. That means using Adobe InDesign or Illustrator to set type size, spacing, and page layout, then importing photos from Photoshop and editing them to match the layout.

You also check proofs on screen and on printed sheets, make corrections, prepare color separations, and export final files as PDFs with Acrobat. In a small shop you might also load files, oversee the press, and deliver final printed products.

Start with Adobe InDesign for page layout and Adobe Photoshop for image editing; those two cover most compositing work. Learn Acrobat to make print-ready PDFs and Illustrator for vector art and logos.

Also get comfortable with macOS, and basic HTML/CSS or LaTeX if you want scientific or digital publishing tasks. Knowing XML helps for structured text workflows.

A compositor focuses on assembling final pages for print or digital delivery: placing text, images, checking proofs, and preparing color separations. Graphic designers create the visual ideas and artwork; compositors turn those into final, print-ready layouts.

Photo editors mainly fix and retouch photos in Photoshop. Compositors do some editing, but the core is layout, output settings, and making files match printing specifications.

AI can speed tasks like cleaning backgrounds, generating captions, or suggesting layout options. Use AI for drafts, but always verify: check image quality, color accuracy, and legal rights to any generated content.

Never rely on AI to set final color separations or produce press-ready PDFs. Always open files in Photoshop/InDesign, proof them on screen and on paper, and document sources and licenses for any AI-generated elements.

Know type basics: font size, leading (line spacing), tracking, and kerning. Be able to set precise coordinates for images and enter color specs (CMYK values) into the system for color correction.

Understand color separations and choose number of printing colors (process CMYK or spot colors). You should read a proof, catch layout errors, and export a PDF/X file that printers expect.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for 2025, 3,350 people were employed as compositors. The median annual wage was $55,290; the lowest tenth earned $35,680 and the top tenth earned $96,170.

Pay varies by location, industry (book, magazine, packaging), and skills like color separation, press knowledge, or XML/LaTeX publishing.

Build a small portfolio: create multi-page layouts in InDesign (magazine spread, menu, book page), edit photos in Photoshop, and export print-ready PDFs with Acrobat. Practice setting type, spacing, and color separations.

Take online courses for InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat. Learn to use macOS and try a LaTeX workflow if you want scientific publishing. Apply for junior compositor or prepress assistant roles, mentioning practical work and the software you know.

How far can AI take you?

one question
Be honest — how far can a language model take you on printing?
There is a real answer, and it is not the flattering one.
