Questions people actually ask

You split time between teaching, crits (project reviews), and hands-on prep. Mornings often have lectures or studio critiques where you review students' plans and CADD files, like AutoCAD or Adobe Illustrator exports.

Afternoons go to grading, meeting students, and preparing materials in Adobe InDesign or Photoshop for handouts. Some days include site visits (inspect proposed building sites or vessels) or coordinating with industry partners for live projects.

Start with the tools you’ll use every day: CADD software (AutoCAD or similar) and Adobe Creative Cloud apps—Photoshop for imagery, Illustrator for diagrams, and InDesign for course handouts and portfolios.

If your program uses cloud or data tools, know basics of Amazon Web Services (EC2) or Amazon Redshift only if your school runs big simulation or research projects. For most teaching, strong CADD plus Adobe tools are enough.

Use AI as an assistant: generate presentation drafts, annotate code snippets, or propose initial layout ideas, then have students critique and rework those suggestions. Require students to document what AI produced and what they changed.

Never let AI replace learning core skills: manual sketching, structural reasoning, or CADD modeling. Teach AI as a tool for iterations and research, not a final designer.

The lowest tenth earns around $62,300 and the top tenth about $161,420. Those numbers cover design-related roles broadly, so teaching salaries vary by institution, rank, and location.

Practicing architects or specialized naval designers may earn more or less depending on firm size and certifications. BLS is the source for these ranges.

Show you can do the tasks: run feasibility or environmental impact studies, gather environmental sustainability data, and calculate energy savings by comparing your design to baseline standards. Build a portfolio with a project that models energy use and savings.

Offer a module where students do operating and maintenance manuals and a simple energy-savings calc. Use real tools and reports—CADD models plus documented calculations—to prove you can teach the subject.

They overlap but aren’t identical. An architect or naval engineer practices design and construction: they develop construction plans, administer contracts, inspect sites, or ensure vessel compliance with regulations. A design educator teaches those skills, critiques student work, and prepares curricula and materials.

Educators may also do research or professional projects (feasibility studies, analyze floating structures), but their main job is teaching and mentoring, not running construction contracts or certifying vessels.

Master CADD software and how to prepare clean output for critique: dimensioned plans, sections, and 3D views students can print or annotate. Being fluent in CAD shows you can teach planning structures and construction documents.

Second, learn the Adobe suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) to make assignment sheets, portfolios, and grading rubrics that look professional and are easy for students to follow.
