Many mornings are desk work: reading reports, checking spatial data in ESRI ArcGIS, and writing with Microsoft Word. You might prepare a PowerPoint for noon meetings explaining map trends to planners or policymakers.

Afternoons often mean field work: collecting GPS points, taking photos (sometimes edited in Adobe Photoshop), or supervising surveys. Evenings commonly involve cleaning data in Python or SQL and running statistics in IBM SPSS to find trends for the next day’s briefing.

Start with ESRI ArcGIS because most governments and consulting firms use it for mapping and spatial analysis. Pair that with basic Python for scripting tasks and SQL for querying tabular data.

Also learn Microsoft Word and PowerPoint for reports and presentations, and IBM SPSS Statistics or equivalent for statistical tests. Adobe Photoshop is useful for polishing map graphics but comes after the core analysis tools.

Use AI to speed repetitive tasks—automating map labeling, classifying satellite images, or finding patterns in large datasets—while keeping human review. Always document the model, input data, and parameters so others can audit your work.

Avoid black-box decisions for public policy. Validate models with holdout data and statistical tests in SPSS or Python. Protect sensitive survey or location data: remove identifiers and follow your agency’s privacy rules.

A bachelor’s degree in geography, GIS, earth science, or a related field is common. Take courses in GIS (ArcGIS), statistics (SPSS or Python libraries), and field methods, plus at least one programming or SQL class.

Get hands-on experience: internships with local planning agencies, volunteering on field surveys, or small projects mapping with ArcGIS. Employers value a portfolio of maps, a GitHub with scripts, or sample reports in Word and PowerPoint.
