You split time between fieldwork and office tasks. Mornings might start at a site supervising test well drilling or collecting water and contamination samples. You verify contractors follow rules and record field measurements.

Afternoons are for data entry and analysis in Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS, running groundwater models (sometimes C++ tools or specialized hydro models), and writing reports or presenting findings in Word or PowerPoint.

Expect ESRI ArcGIS for maps and spatial analysis, Microsoft Excel for tables and calculations, and Microsoft Word/PowerPoint for reports and presentations. Employers often expect basic Microsoft Office fluency.

For computer modeling of water systems you may use C++-based programs or specialized groundwater models; GIS skills are essential because you’ll create GIS reports and fix GIS issues.
