Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a lab assistant school actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

What the work pays

two countries, two different measures

India

the occupation GROUP, not this job · PLFS via ILOSTAT 2025
  • ₹15,575 a month — the median for Service and sales workers, the group this work sits in
  • India publishes pay by broad occupation group, so this covers many jobs besides this one. It is a shape, not a salary.

Questions people actually ask

You usually arrive 20–30 minutes before classes to set up labs, audio‑visual gear, and materials. You follow the teacher’s lesson plans, prepare equipment, and check that Google Classroom or ClassDojo has the right handouts or links.

During class you supervise students with or without the teacher present, assist with demonstrations, monitor behavior, and help with grading or recording results in Microsoft Excel or paper gradebooks. After school you clean classrooms, laminate materials, file work in Microsoft Word/Paper, and attend brief staff meetings or committees.

Expect to use Google Classroom and ClassDojo to view assignments, post materials, and message teachers or guardians. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel handle worksheets, presentations, and grade or inventory spreadsheets.

You’ll also use Microsoft Outlook for staff email and Automate the Schools ATS only if the district manages schedules there. Basic AV equipment operation (projectors, speakers) and a laminator are everyday physical tools.

You can use AI to draft rubrics, create practice questions, or generate labels, but always check accuracy against the teacher’s lesson plan. Teachers must approve anything AI creates before it’s given to students.

Never use AI to grade high‑stakes tests without teacher review. Do not feed student names or personal data into public AI services—use district‑approved tools and follow privacy rules in staff meetings or school policy.

Start with a high school diploma; many districts prefer or require a paraprofessional certificate or some college coursework in education or science. Take a district paraprofessional exam if they require one.

Practice basic Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), learn Google Classroom and ClassDojo, and get comfortable operating laminators and AV equipment. Volunteer in a classroom or contact your district HR for openings and to learn their hiring steps (application, background check, TB test).

A lab assistant supports teachers: you follow lesson plans, assist with instruction, and supervise students, but you don’t usually design or lead whole courses. Teachers plan content and give final grades; you help grade under their direction.

Compared with a TA, which in some schools is a college student working under a teacher, a lab assistant is often a permanent support staff role with additional clerical tasks (typing, filing, using Automate the Schools ATS) and responsibilities like bus supervision and equipment maintenance.
