Hands on the work11
Design layout drawings+
Produce layout drawings for the control room, dimension equipment racks, show cable runs and clearances, annotate panel labels and mounting holes so installers have exact positions and part numbers to quote from.

when the reply comes backPush once: ask it to sharpen the weakest part, and to say what it assumed. Helpful?
Prepare wiring diagrams+
Draft complete wiring diagrams for the control panel showing terminal-to-terminal connections, include wire gauges, fuse ratings and cable lengths, and label each diagram with revision number so technicians can wire the panel without on-site questions.

Work from sketches and specifications+
Lay out the assembly panels from my hand sketches and the spec sheet so the electrical components fit the board outline, show connector clearances, call out test points and banned-material notes, and export a print-ready dieline for review by engineering on Thursday.

Electrical equipment components+
Lay out the electrical equipment components on the assembly sheet for panel B-12, placing transformers, breakers and busbars to scale, annotate part numbers and banned-material notes, then produce a print-ready drawing for review by Martin by Wednesday.

Walk the north mezzanine and measure spans for cable runs affecting the lighting and panel feed, note centre-to-centre distances and clearance obstacles, update the span worksheet with as-built lengths and attach photos to the job record by close of business.

Reproduce working drawings on copy machines or trace drawings in ink.+
Trace the original working drawing onto my drafting sheet in ink, reproducing all reference numbers, hole centres, and material callouts exactly, then staple the reproduction to the job ticket and mark the original as archived.

Determine the order of work and the method of presentation, such as orthographic or isometric drawing.+
Decide presentation order for the panel set: produce orthographic front and side elevations for manufacturing, add one isometric assembly view for the installers, annotate each with part numbers and banned-material flags, then circulate the set for review.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a layout artist actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You spend most of the day making and editing drawings that show where electrical parts go. That includes wiring diagrams, equipment layouts, and orthographic or isometric views so installers know exact positions and sizes.

You’ll read sketches and specs from engineers, measure spans for wire and cable, load and save files in the company library, and run print or trace copies. Expect meetings with electrical engineers to check design details and a block of time testing or checking final layout files on CAD software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists 17,920 people employed under this category. The median annual wage is $76,870; the lowest tenth is $50,040 and the top tenth is $120,290.

Use BLS data to set expectations: pay varies a lot by industry, location, and whether you supervise others or do specialized electrical testing or CAD automation.

A drafter or CAD technician often focuses on producing drawings from detailed instructions. A Layout Artist combines that drawing work with electrical-specific tasks: wiring diagrams, measuring cable spans, testing electrical equipment, and sometimes writing technical reports.

Layout Artists also collaborate more with electrical engineers during research and may set drill sizes, select materials and specify dimensions. If you supervise or train others, that also points toward the Layout Artist role.

You don’t always need a four-year degree. Many employers hire people with a technical diploma or certificate in CAD or electrical technology plus hands-on CAD experience with AutoCAD or SolidWorks.

Show a portfolio of wiring diagrams, layouts, and sample reports. Basic comfort with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and the ability to follow engineering specs and industry drawing standards is often enough to get an entry-level job.

AI can help draft text for reports, extract data from specs, or suggest repetitive CAD commands, but never let AI change drawings that affect safety without human review. Final layouts and wiring diagrams must be checked against specifications and industry standards by a qualified person.

Keep CAD files and version control in your company library, do not paste confidential specs into public AI chat, and use AI for drafting text or generating checklists—not for final electrical calculations or drilling instructions.

They look for precise CAD skills (AutoCAD, sometimes SolidWorks or Revit), the ability to read engineering specs, and practical knowledge of electrical components and wiring diagrams. Employers often test drawing accuracy, dimensioning, and whether you follow industry standards.

They also check practical skills: measuring for cable spans, preparing parts lists in Excel, troubleshooting a test layout, and clear written communication in short technical reports or charts. Supervisory or training experience is a plus.

How far can AI take you?

one question
Be honest — how far can a language model take you on drawing?
There is a real answer, and it is not the flattering one.
