Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Teach the whole rule-set in one sitting
  • Answer every 'how do I' question you have

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Do the thing for you once you know the rule

Questions people actually ask

You’ll split time between visual work and technical tasks. Morning might be sketching layouts, making moodboards or storyboards, and creating packaging artwork in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.

Afternoons often go to web tasks: building prototypes or Web models (HTML, JavaScript), testing pages, updating website content, and documenting performance metrics like server load or browser types. You’ll also attend quick client calls to align visuals with business strategy.

Expect Adobe Creative Cloud apps all the time — Illustrator for dielines and graphics, InDesign for multi-page documents, Photoshop for image prep, and After Effects for motion mockups. Use Acrobat for final proofs.

On the web side you’ll encounter HTML, JavaScript, maybe SQL for simple queries, and cloud services like Amazon Web Services (AWS), including EC2 and CloudFormation for deployments and DynamoDB for small databases when documenting traffic or performance.

You create physical design assets (labels, dielines) in Illustrator/InDesign, then build web-accessible prototypes showing how packaging appears online or in AR. Prototypes use HTML, JavaScript, and image assets optimized in Photoshop.

You’ll make interaction or sequence diagrams and system models to show how an online configurator or product page should work. That helps developers implement the design and tests run against planned schedules.

AI can speed mockups, suggest layouts, or generate copy drafts, but always check results. Use AI to create initial moodboards, color palettes, or code snippets, then refine in Adobe apps and hand-edit HTML/JS for production quality.

For safety, never let AI produce final artwork or legal copy without human review. Track changes, keep original files, and follow client branding. If AI suggests code for AWS deployments, have a developer review it before running CloudFormation or EC2 scripts.

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports 113,330 employed under related design occupations and gives a median pay of $104,000 per year. The lowest tenth earn about $53,750 and the top tenth about $201,550, according to BLS 2025 data.

Use those figures as a range. Your salary depends on location, company size, how much web/dev work you do, and skills with tools like AWS and Adobe Creative Cloud.

Start with core design tools: master Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop for dielines and artwork. Practice creating moodboards and storyboards for pre-production work.

Then learn web basics: HTML and JavaScript for prototypes, and simple SQL or DynamoDB concepts for data. Use sandbox AWS accounts to try EC2 and CloudFormation templates, but run deployments only after you understand costs and security.

Learn interaction thinking: create system interaction and sequence diagrams, then build working prototypes. That means stronger HTML/JS skills plus experience making and testing web models.

Also get comfortable with documenting technical constraints (server load, bandwidth, browser/device types) and writing clear technical documentation so engineers can implement your designs reliably.

How far can AI take you?

one question
Be honest — how far can a language model take you on packaging?
There is a real answer, and it is not the flattering one.
