You’ll split time between field visits and office work. Mornings often start with field sampling: collecting soil, water, or host specimens, mapping sample sites with ESRI ArcGIS, and noting GPS coordinates.

Afternoons are data entry and analysis in Microsoft Excel, writing up methods and results in Microsoft Word, and preparing slides in PowerPoint for colleagues or outreach. You may also run lab tests, coordinate with government agencies by email in Outlook, and attend meetings about conservation plans.

ArcGIS (ESRI) is used for mapping parasite distributions and making habitat maps. Use it to build and maintain GIS databases and to produce soil or habitat maps.

Excel handles data tables and basic stats; Word and PowerPoint produce reports and outreach materials; Outlook manages stakeholder coordination. Adobe Acrobat prepares final PDFs, and AutoCAD may be used when reviewing restoration site plans or layout drawings.

Parasitologists focus on parasites, their hosts, and infection dynamics; you’ll do lab tests, host sampling, and parasite-specific monitoring. You still map habitats and do fieldwork like wildlife biologists, but the target and methods (microscopy, parasite life-cycle studies) differ.

Wildlife biologists study species populations and behavior more broadly; ecologists study ecosystems and interactions. Parasitologists spend more time on disease testing, specimen prep, and coordinating with public-health or agriculture agencies.
