Hands on the work15
Create graphics and animation using computer programs+
Design and render a set of title cards and three looping background cycles, assemble frame sequences with onion‑skin timing, export a proof reel and hand the finished graphics to the compositor by Thursday afternoon.

Convert real objects to animated objects through modeling+
Convert these eight found objects on the prop table into articulated puppet rigs ready for frame-by-frame capture, note required joint types, suggest lightweight armatures, and file one photo set and a parts list by Tuesday midday for the build shop.

Script, plan, and create animated sequences under deadlines+
Write the shooting script, beat-by-beat storyboards, and a two-week shot schedule for the 45‑second sequence for Friday's client review, call out required replacement faces, motion cycles, and deliver a camera plan for each shot.

Assemble, typeset, scan, and produce digital art or film negatives+
Scan the ten hand-painted backgrounds and assemble a print-ready sheet of negatives and a zipped set of high-resolution TIFFs, apply consistent colour correction, and export one proof PDF for lab approval by Wednesday lunch.

Construct and manipulate scale models+
Build and adjust three scale models to exact shot measurements, document each model's movable joints and tolerances, photograph with scale rulers, and hand the parts and photos to the fabrication lead on Thursday morning.

Implement configuration control systems+
Establish project naming, versioning and backup rules, record current asset checksums, lock the master puppet files, and circulate a configuration matrix to Tom in production and Maria in archive before close of business Friday.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a stop motion animator actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You’ll start by checking the shot list and model checks — which puppets, set pieces, and lighting need work. Mornings often mean adjusting armatures, fixing seams, and planning the next few frames of movement.

Afternoons usually go to shooting with a camera, then importing sequences into Adobe After Effects or Photoshop for cleanup and timing. You’ll meet the director or client mid-day to review playback and get notes, then revise models or re-shoot until the scene matches the plan.

Expect to use Adobe After Effects for compositing and timing, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for texture and matte work, and macOS as the common operating system. For layout or props you might use Autodesk AutoCAD for precise set pieces and C++ only if you're programming custom control rigs.

You’ll also handle physical tools: armatures, puppets, cameras, lighting rigs, and sometimes mechanised props or animatronics that you build and tweak on set.

Use AI for speed tasks only: let it rough out background fills, clone cleanup in Photoshop, or organize dailies, but keep final animation frames and puppet performance hand-crafted. AI-generated in-between frames can make things look smooth but often lose the subtle physical imperfections that sell stop motion.

Always review and edit AI output in Adobe After Effects or Photoshop. Credit and archive the original hand-made elements so clients know what was generated and what you physically animated.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for 2025, there were about 19,970 employed in this field. Median pay is $102,030 per year, the lowest tenth earn about $58,600, and the top tenth about $177,110.

Those numbers cover a range of roles that include animation, effects, and related specialties. Freelancers and studio employees can fall anywhere in that range depending on hours, benefits, and project types.

Stop motion uses physical objects (puppets, sets) that you move a little at a time and photograph. CGI builds and moves models inside a computer; motion graphics are mostly 2D or vector-based work in After Effects or Illustrator.

Stop motion requires skills in model-making, lighting, and camera work plus digital cleanup. CGI needs modeling and rendering skills; motion graphics focuses more on typography and vector animation. Many productions combine techniques, so you’ll often composite stop motion into After Effects.

Learn precise frame-by-frame planning and puppet rigging. That means knowing how to construct and adjust armatures and mechanised props so they hold poses and move predictably during a shoot.

Pair that with basic compositing in Adobe After Effects and cleanup in Photoshop — if your physical shots are stable and your digital edits are clean, the work will read as professional even on a tight schedule.
