You usually split time between the field and the office. In the morning you set up total stations or GNSS receivers, collect measurements of boundaries, distances, and angles, and check surface locations of subsurface features like utilities.

Back at the office you import field data into AutoCAD Civil 3D or Carlson SurvCADD, run computations, prepare plans and a surveying report, and email clients or contractors using Microsoft Outlook and Word. You also review legal records and adjust engineering designs when needed.

Field gear: total stations, GNSS receivers, 3D scanners, lidar sensors, and drones for collecting coordinates and terrain data. You’ll also use specialized measurement tools for water surveys and marine structures.

Office systems: Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D, Carlson SurvCADD, AutoCAD, Bentley InRoads or MicroStation for drawings, and ESRI ArcGIS for maps. Microsoft Excel and Word are used for records, reports, and spreadsheets.
