Script, plan, and create animated sequences under deadlines+
Draft a shot list, write scene-by-scene timing notes and an animator brief, then block out keyframes and deliver a first-pass animatic for client review by Thursday to meet the studio's two-week delivery window.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a technical animator actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You usually start by checking the schedule and notes from yesterday: bug lists, client feedback, and meeting minutes. Then you split time between scripting tools (often C++ or node-based rigs), refining motion curves in Adobe After Effects, and testing assets in the engine or compositing pipeline.

Afternoons often mean meetings with artists, riggers, or VFX leads to sync on deadlines, then focused work: building a procedural rig, tweaking a particle sim, or exporting final frames. Expect switching between macOS apps (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and command-line tools during the day.

Start with Adobe After Effects and Photoshop on macOS — studios use them every day for motion comps and texture edits. Learn basic C++ fundamentals next; many studios write plugins or toolchains in C++ for performance.

Also get comfortable with Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign) and simple rigging/animation tools. Knowing how to export sequences, manage layers, and read an error log is more useful early on than advanced math.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports about 19,970 employed technical animators. The median annual wage is $102,030. The lowest tenth earns about $58,600, and the top tenth about $177,110, per BLS 2025 data.

Those numbers come from BLS occupational wage statistics and reflect the full range: freelancers, in-house studio artists, and VFX shop senior staff. Pay varies by city, project type, and whether you handle effects like pyrotechnics or mechanised props.

Use AI for draft work only: blockout motion ideas, generate texture concepts, or speed up repetitive scripting. Always keep original files and document which AI model you used and its inputs.

Never submit AI-generated material to clients without a human-checked revision. Studios require provenance (where an asset came from) and often forbid unlicensed source material. Keep copies of licenses and run generated elements through your studio’s quality checks.

A character animator focuses on the craft of acting and performance: keyframes, weight, and timing for characters. A technical animator builds the tools and systems that let character animators do their job—rigs, deformation systems, motion-graphics pipelines, and plugins (often in C++).

Technical animators handle integration with compositing tools like After Effects, automation, and troubleshooting export issues. If you like scripting, production systems, and problem-solving more than hand-posing every shot, technical animation fits better.

Rigging and scripting are the fastest path in most studios: rigs keep animation teams productive and often require C++ or scripting languages for custom controls. Mention real examples: a character facial rig or a procedural walk-cycle system.

Particle sims and FX (wind, fog, explosions) are high-value for VFX-heavy shops, and mechanised props/animatronics matter for practical effects teams. Match your skill to the studio’s output: game studios want rigging/scripting; VFX houses value sims and pyrotechnic-safe experience.

Include completed shots that show end-to-end work: a modeled prop turned into an animated, textured asset, exported and composited in After Effects. Add short breakdowns: what tools you used (C++, Photoshop, After Effects), the deadline, and what bugs you fixed.

Show pipeline notes: source files, version control commits, and a brief mention of client or team reviews you incorporated. Employers look for reliable delivery—so demonstrate a few polished pieces with clear process and dates.

How far can AI take you?

Be honest — how far can a language model take you on animating?
There is a real answer, and it is not the flattering one.
