Open Adobe Acrobat.
Go to File > Combine Files.
Click Add Files and select the PDF files you want to merge.
Arrange the files in your desired order by dragging and dropping them within the list.
Click Combine to merge the selected files into a single PDF document.
Save the new combined PDF to your preferred location.
You can preview and reorder files before combining to ensure the final PDF is in the correct sequence.
This runs in the Acrobat app - there is no separate API for this task.
Preserving bookmarks when combining PDFs helps you keep the structure of your original files. Each source file becomes a top-level bookmark in the new combined PDF. This makes the large document much easier to navigate and find specific sections quickly.
If your original files had their own page numbers, combining them will often result in page numbers that restart with each new document. To fix this, you will need to add continuous page numbers to the combined PDF after you have merged all the files. Acrobat has tools to add new page numbering across the entire document.
This issue can happen if the source files have problems with their internal structure. Adobe Acrobat might struggle to process them correctly, leading to the process hanging or only showing the first file repeatedly. To fix this, try re-saving each source file using 'Save As' to refresh its structure, add files one by one, or use the 'Help > Repair Installation' option in Acrobat.
