Scan the fragile 1889–1912 diaries from the Fletcher collection into durable PDFs, compress files to reasonable sizes,…
Open your scanned PDF document in Adobe Acrobat.
Navigate to Tools and select Recognize Text.
Click Recognize Text, then choose In This File.
In the Recognize Text settings, set the output format to Searchable Image (Exact) to preserve the original image quality.
CautionUsing 'Searchable Image (Exact)' ensures the original scanned image is not altered, only a hidden text layer is added.
Set the document language to match the text in your scan for best accuracy.
Click Recognize Text to start the OCR process.
Save the PDF after OCR is complete.
Best practiceFor best OCR results and image fidelity, scan your originals at 300 dpi and avoid excessive brightness or contrast settings.
Choose 'Searchable Image (Exact)' in the OCR settings to keep your scanned page visuals unchanged while adding searchable text.
This runs in the Acrobat app - there is no separate API for this task.
OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition. It is important because it changes pictures of words in scanned diaries into real text that you can search, copy, or read with a screen reader. This makes old, fragile diaries much easier to use and saves time when looking for information.
If your diary scan is blurry or has low-quality (for example, scanned at 72 dpi), Scan & OCR might not recognize the text well or could make mistakes. For best results, scan at 300 dpi or higher and make sure the pages are as clear as possible. Good quality scans help the OCR feature find and turn the words into real, searchable text.
Scan & OCR gives this error when the diary page already has real, selectable text instead of just an image. OCR only works on image-only pages. If your scan is mixed or already has text, remove the text layer or use a scan that is only an image.
