Best practiceIf you have bookmarks or links, double-check them after renumbering, as changing page labels can affect navigation.
You can quickly renumber all pages by right-clicking any thumbnail and using the Number Pages feature.
This runs in the Acrobat app - there is no separate API for this task.
| Feature | What it does | How it looks |
|---|---|---|
| Page Labels | Changes the page number shown in Acrobat's navigation. It does not change the page's content or order. | The numbers appear in Acrobat's page navigation bar and thumbnails. |
| Bates Numbering | Adds a unique, sequential number as a permanent stamp (like ink) onto the content of each page. | The numbers are printed directly on the page content, usually in a corner. |
PDF page labels are independent of the physical page order. This means the number you see displayed (the page label) can be different from the page's actual position in the document. Changing page labels only changes the displayed number, not the page's position. If you want to change the order, you need to move the pages in the 'Page Thumbnails' panel.
Page Labels are special numbers or letters that Adobe Acrobat shows for each page. They are useful because they let you make the page numbers you see in the PDF match any printed numbers on the actual pages. For example, if your document has an introduction numbered 'i, ii, iii' and the main part numbered '1, 2, 3', Page Labels help Acrobat show these correct numbers in its navigation. This makes it easier to find specific pages, especially in complex documents.
