The 'Compare Files' tool can fail if either of your PDF documents has security settings that prevent comparison. This is a common issue. To fix it, you need to remove the security protection from both the older and newer PDF files before you try to compare them. Look for options to 'Remove Protection' or 'Unsecure Document' in Acrobat.
For a contract revision, you should use 'Compare Files' and make sure to select the 'Compare text only' option. Contracts are mostly text, and this setting will help you focus on changes to words and sentences without being distracted by minor graphic shifts or layout adjustments. After comparing, Acrobat will show you a summary and let you navigate through each text change, which is perfect for legal documents.
The 'Compare Files' tool can also help you manage digital signatures. You can use it to compare different versions of a document that has been signed. This allows you to see if any changes were made to the document after it was signed, or how the document evolved through different signing stages. It helps ensure the integrity of signed agreements.
