| Feature | Effect on Content | Security |

| Black Rectangle | Covers text, but it remains underneath. | Low security; text can be copied and seen. |
Redaction only removes visible text and images. Sanitize removes hidden information like metadata, comments, or old layers. If you do not sanitize, someone might still find sensitive details hidden in the file, even after you redact it. This extra step makes your document truly secure.
For many items like Social Security Numbers or account numbers, use Acrobat's pattern-based auto-redaction. This feature can find and mark all instances of a specific pattern automatically, saving a lot of time. After auto-redaction, have another person check a few random pages to make sure it worked correctly. This helps catch any mistakes.
Redaction Codes are labels that explain why certain information was removed, like 'Privacy' or 'Confidential'. Using a consistent list of these codes across your team helps everyone understand why each part of a document was redacted. This creates clear records and helps with legal or internal reviews later. You can edit these code sets in Acrobat Pro.
