Redacting text uses a special tool that permanently removes the text or image from the document. It is gone forever. Drawing a black rectangle only covers the text visually. The text is still underneath and can be copied and pasted, making it visible again. Always use the 'Redact a PDF' tool for true security.
Redaction only removes visible content like text and images. PDFs can also contain hidden data, such as metadata, comments, or previous versions. Sanitizing the PDF removes this hidden data, ensuring no sensitive information remains in the file. This provides a complete cleanup of your document.
For many SSNs or account numbers, use Acrobat Pro's pattern-based auto-redaction. This feature can find and redact all instances of a specific pattern automatically. After auto-redaction, have another person review a random sample of the document to make sure all sensitive data was correctly hidden. This helps catch any missed items.
Redaction codes are labels that explain why certain information was hidden. For example, a code might be 'PRIVILEGED' or 'PERSONAL INFO'. Using the same codes across your team helps everyone understand why parts of a document are redacted. This makes it easier to review and manage documents, especially in legal or compliance settings.
