Redacting permanently removes the text or image data from the PDF file, making it unrecoverable. Drawing a black rectangle only covers the content visually; the original text or image data remains underneath and can be easily copied and pasted or searched. Always use the Redact tool for true data removal to protect sensitive information.
Redaction removes only what you can see. However, PDFs can hold hidden data like metadata, comments, or old revisions. Sanitizing removes this hidden data. If you don't sanitize, secret information could still be found in these hidden parts, even after you redact the visible text. This ensures full data privacy.
Yes, for large amounts of personal information like Social Security Numbers or account numbers, Acrobat Pro has a feature for pattern-based auto-redaction. This tool can find and mark all instances of a specific pattern. After it runs, you should still have a person check a random sample to make sure everything was correctly redacted and nothing was missed.
Redaction codes are labels you can add to redacted areas to explain why something was hidden (e.g., 'Privacy', 'Confidential'). Using a consistent list of codes across your team helps everyone understand why certain information was removed. This makes teamwork smoother and ensures that all documents follow the same rules for hiding sensitive data.
