This runs in the Acrobat app - there is no separate API for this task.
Drawing a black rectangle over text only covers it visually; the text remains underneath and can be copied or searched. This means the information is still discoverable. The Redact tool, however, permanently removes the selected content from the document. It replaces the text or image with a black box, making the original data unrecoverable. For true security and privacy, always use the dedicated Redact tool.
Sanitizing a PDF after redaction is crucial because redaction only removes visible content. PDFs can contain hidden data, such as metadata (author, creation date), layers, or previous document revisions. If this hidden data is not removed, it might still contain the sensitive information you tried to hide. Sanitizing ensures all non-visible sensitive data is also stripped from the document, preventing accidental disclosure.
For redacting large amounts of personally identifiable information (PII) like SSNs or account numbers, Adobe Acrobat Pro offers pattern-based auto-redaction. You can use its search feature to find specific patterns (like SSN formats) and redact all instances at once. After auto-redaction, it's a good practice to have a second person (peer-QC) review a random sample of the document to ensure all sensitive data was correctly removed and no mistakes were made.
Metadata is 'data about data.' In a PDF, it includes information like the document's author, creation date, modification history, and keywords. This metadata can sometimes contain sensitive details or clues about the document's origin or content that you don't want to share. For document security, it matters because even if you redact visible text, hidden metadata could still leak private information. Sanitizing the PDF removes this metadata.
