Best practiceAlways double-check your search term and results to ensure all sensitive information is covered, especially with patterns like SSNs.
Save the redacted PDF with a new file name.
You can use the Find Text and Redact feature to quickly locate and mark all instances of sensitive words or patterns for redaction throughout your document.
This runs in the Acrobat app - there is no separate API for this task.
Redacting removes text and images you can see on the page, making them blacked out. Sanitizing, however, removes hidden information like metadata, comments, attachments, and old versions of the document. For full security, you must do both. Redaction handles what's visible, while sanitizing cleans up what's hidden 'behind the scenes' in the file.
Using a consistent reason-code list helps your team understand why specific information was hidden. It makes the redaction process clear and organized. This is especially useful in legal or official documents where you might need to explain your redactions later. It improves teamwork and document management.
For many items like SSNs or account numbers, use Acrobat Pro's pattern-based auto-redaction. This feature can find and redact all instances of a specific pattern automatically. After auto-redacting, have another person (peer-QC) check a random sample of the document. This helps catch any mistakes and ensures all sensitive data is properly hidden.
No, once you save a PDF after applying redactions, the changes are permanent and cannot be undone. This is why it is very important to always work on a copy of your original document. Keep the unredacted original in a secure place. This way, you always have a version of the document with all its information.
