Open the PDF you want to redact in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
Go to Tools and select Redact.
Click Find and Remove Text.
Enter the word, phrase, or pattern you want to search for in the search box.
Choose the location to search (e.g., current document or all PDFs in a folder), then click Search.
Review the search results and check all instances you want to redact, or use Select All to mark every occurrence.
Click Mark for Redaction to mark the selected instances.
Click Apply Redactions and confirm when prompted to permanently remove the marked content.

Using the sanitize feature is important because redacting only removes the names you see on the page, but extra data like metadata or hidden layers may still have sensitive information. Sanitize cleans out these hidden details, making sure nobody can find donor names even if they look deeper into the file. This keeps your document truly safe for sharing.
If your donor list is a scanned image, you can use redaction to cover the names, but you should check if Acrobat recognized the text (OCR). If not, redaction will only hide the image part, and names may not be fully removed. Always test by searching or copying to be sure.
