Best practiceAlways double-check your search term and results to ensure all sensitive information is covered, especially with patterns like SSNs.
Save the redacted PDF with a new file name.
You can use the Find Text and Redact feature to quickly locate and mark all instances of sensitive words or patterns for redaction throughout your document.
This runs in the Acrobat app - there is no separate API for this task.
Redacting visible content removes text and images you can see on the page, replacing them with black boxes. Sanitizing a PDF removes hidden information that is not visible, like document metadata, comments, attachments, or hidden layers. Both are important for full privacy, as redaction handles what you see, and sanitizing handles what is hidden behind the scenes.
You should use redaction because drawing a black rectangle only covers the text visually. The actual text remains underneath and can be copied and pasted by anyone. Redaction, however, permanently removes the text or image data from the document, making it impossible to recover. This ensures your financial data is truly secure and unreadable.
For many SSNs or account numbers, you can use pattern-based auto-redaction. This feature helps Acrobat find and mark all instances of specific patterns, like SSNs, throughout your document automatically. After the automatic process, it is a good practice to have a colleague review a random selection of the redacted areas. This 'peer-QC' helps ensure all sensitive information was correctly hidden.
Redaction codes are labels you can apply to redacted areas, explaining why the content was hidden (e.g., 'PRIVACY', 'FINANCIAL DATA'). They are useful for financial documents because they provide a clear, consistent record of why specific information was removed. This helps maintain transparency and compliance, especially when multiple people are working on the same document or when documents need to be reviewed later.
