Best practiceAlways double-check your search term and results to ensure all sensitive information is covered, especially with patterns like SSNs.
Save the redacted PDF with a new file name.
You can use the Find Text and Redact feature to quickly locate and mark all instances of sensitive words or patterns for redaction throughout your document.
This runs in the Acrobat app - there is no separate API for this task.
To redact a PDF means to completely remove or hide sensitive information so nobody can see or recover it. This is important for financial data because private numbers or prices must not be shared with people who should not see them. Redaction keeps your information safe and private.
If your PDF is a blurry scan, Redact can only cover what you select. If the text is not recognized, Redact will hide the area you drag over, but it cannot read or find text that is not clear. For best results, use OCR (text recognition) first so the tool can find text, or carefully mark the area to cover everything needed.
| Method | What happens | Is it secure? |
|---|---|---|
| Redact tool | Permanently deletes the selected information | Yes, the info is gone |
| Black box | Covers text, but the text is still under the box | No, info can be copied |
Adobe PDF Services API does not have a redaction feature. Only Acrobat Pro desktop can do true redaction, so you must use the desktop app for this task.
