I am about to share the assessment draft with the public tomorrow but the document contains landowner names, addresses…

Click Mark for Redaction to mark the selected instances.
Click Apply Redactions and confirm when prompted to permanently remove the marked content.
CautionRedactions are permanent and cannot be undone after saving.
Best practiceYou can customize the appearance of redaction marks before applying them by adjusting settings in the Redact tool.
Best practiceAlways double-check your search term and results to ensure all sensitive information is covered, especially with patterns like SSNs.
Save the redacted PDF with a new file name.
You can use the Find Text and Redact feature to quickly locate and mark all instances of sensitive words or patterns for redaction throughout your document.
This runs in the Acrobat app - there is no separate API for this task.
Drawing a black rectangle only covers the text, but the text is still there underneath. Anyone can select, copy, and paste the text to reveal it. The 'Redact' tool, however, completely removes the text or image from the document. This means the content is truly gone and cannot be recovered, making your document safe for sharing.
Sanitizing a PDF is important because redaction only removes visible content. PDFs can contain hidden data like author names, creation dates, or even previous versions of the document (metadata). Sanitizing removes all this hidden information, ensuring that no sensitive data is accidentally left behind after you redact the visible parts.
For many items like Social Security Numbers or account numbers, Acrobat Pro has a feature for 'pattern-based auto-redaction'. This tool can search for specific patterns of numbers or text and mark them for redaction automatically. After using this, you should still have a team member check a few random examples to make sure everything was hidden correctly.
Redaction is the process of permanently removing sensitive information from a document, making it unreadable and unrecoverable. It is a key step in document security, used to protect private data like names, addresses, or financial details before sharing a document with others. This ensures privacy and compliance with legal requirements.
