Best practiceAlways double-check your search term and results to ensure all sensitive information is covered, especially with patterns like SSNs.
Save the redacted PDF with a new file name.
You can use the Find Text and Redact feature to quickly locate and mark all instances of sensitive words or patterns for redaction throughout your document.
This runs in the Acrobat app - there is no separate API for this task.
Redacting permanently removes the selected content, making it unrecoverable. Drawing a black box just covers the text visually; the text remains in the document and can still be found or copied. Redaction is secure removal, while a black box is only a visual cover.
Redaction only removes visible text and images. A PDF can contain hidden data like metadata, comments, or revision history that might still hold sensitive information. Sanitizing the document removes this hidden data, ensuring that all confidential information is truly gone and cannot be recovered.
Redaction codes are labels used to explain why certain content was removed. For example, a code might be 'PRIVILEGED' or 'PII'. Using consistent codes helps teams understand the reason for each redaction. You can create and edit these code sets in Acrobat Pro to match your team's needs.
Once you apply and save redactions, they are permanent and cannot be undone in that saved file. This is why it's crucial to always work on a copy of your original document. Keep the unredacted original in a secure, access-controlled location. This way, you have a master copy if you ever need to refer to the original content.
