Refine a cluttered traced illustration so it renders sharply and stays small: simplify anchor-heavy paths, remove redundant points, smooth curves where possible, and export an optimized SVG under 50KB for web delivery.

Before finalising the SVG, prevent delivery surprises: compare visual before/after at 100% and thumbnail sizes to ensure no visual regressions, collapse unnecessary groups, and list elements that required simplification and why for engineering review.

How to do it

the tool · the steps · what to avoid
The tool
Pen Tool

The Pen tool creates precise lines and curves to form shapes and paths in Adobe Illustrator.

  1. 1

    Open Illustrator.

  2. 2

Select the Pen tool or press P.

  3. 3

In the Properties panel, set the stroke weight to 1 pt.

  4. 4

Set the stroke color to black in the Properties panel.

  5. 5

Set the fill to none in the Properties panel.

  6. 6

Click anywhere on the artboard to set the first anchor point.

  7. 7

Move the pointer and click again to create a straight line segment.

Best practiceFor curves, click, hold, and drag to where you want to go next. The Pen tool acts like a French curve device.

  8. 8

Continue clicking to add more anchor points and draw your desired path.

  9. 9

To close a path, click on the first anchor point you created.

  10. 10

Save your work by going to File > Save or File > Save As.

Use the Add Anchor Point Tool (+), Delete Anchor Point Tool (-), or Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift-C) to refine your paths.

Illustrator's scripting capabilities can automate path creation or modification, but complex Pen tool operations typically require manual input.

Because you rarely think 'I want the redaction tool'. You think 'I have to share this without leaking the client's details'. Start from the need, and the feature finds you.

Real. Every job here was drawn from what people in real roles were actually seen doing in Illustrator — not a feature checklist.

No. Each page gives you a ready prompt you can paste into an AI assistant, plus the plain steps to do it yourself. Start with either — the goal is the finished job, not the tool.
