Before I lock type for the front-end team, make the headline robust — provide exact letter-spacing and responsive size steps, show fallback web fonts, annotate where truncation or orphans occur, and flag lines that change meaning when wrapped.

How to do it

the tool · the steps · what to avoid
The tool
Type Tool

The Type Tool in Adobe Illustrator allows you to add and manipulate text within your artwork.

  1. 1

Click the Type tool or press T in the Tools panel.

  2. 2

Click on the artboard where you want your text line to begin to create point type.

NotePoint type creates a single line of text that expands as you type.

  3. 3

Alternatively, drag with the Type tool to create an area type box.

NoteArea type uses the boundaries of objects to control text flow within multiple lines.

  4. 4

Type your desired text into the created text object.

  5. 5

To set type along a path, select the Type on a Path tool.

  6. 6

Click your path or shape outline where you want the text to begin.

  7. 7

Type your text, and it will follow the selected path.

  8. 8

To convert text to shapes, select the text with the Selection tool.

  9. 9

Go to Type > Create Outlines or press Shift+Control+O (Windows) / Shift+Command+O (macOS).

Best practiceCreating outlines converts text into editable vector shapes, which is crucial for logo design and ensuring font consistency across systems.

  10. 10

Go to File > Save or File > Save As to commit your work.

Use the Character and Paragraph panels (Window > Type) to fine-tune your text's appearance and layout.

Illustrator's scripting capabilities can automate text placement, formatting, and outline creation for repetitive tasks.

Because you rarely think 'I want the redaction tool'. You think 'I have to share this without leaking the client's details'. Start from the need, and the feature finds you.

Real. Every job here was drawn from what people in real roles were actually seen doing in Illustrator — not a feature checklist.

No. Each page gives you a ready prompt you can paste into an AI assistant, plus the plain steps to do it yourself. Start with either — the goal is the finished job, not the tool.
