Before the spread goes to art direction, make the product shots read as one day on set — match color temperature and shadow contrast to the chosen reference, add consistent shadow direction and contact shadows, normalize highlight rolloff with curves, and provide side-by-side before/after panels for the art director's approval on Thursday.

The tool
Adjustments Panel

The Adjustments panel allows you to non-destructively modify the color and tone of your images in Adobe Photoshop.

  1. 1

Open the Adjustments panel by navigating to Window > Adjustments.

NoteThe Adjustments panel must be open to access color and tonal adjustments.

  2. 2

Click an icon in the Adjustments panel to select the desired adjustment type.

NoteExamples include Levels, Curves, Hue/Saturation, and Brightness/Contrast.

  3. 3

Alternatively, choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer and select the adjustment type.

NoteThis creates an adjustment layer in the Layers panel.

  4. 4

In the Properties panel, adjust the sliders or settings to modify the image.

NoteAn adjustment layer affects all layers below it by default.

  5. 5

Hover over different Adjustment Presets in the Adjustments panel to preview them.

  6. 6

Click an Adjustment Preset to apply it to your image.

  7. 7

Name the adjustment layer in the Layers panel.

Best practiceAlways use adjustment layers instead of direct image adjustments for non-destructive editing.

  8. 8

Set layer options as needed and press Enter to confirm.

To edit a single layer, clip the adjustment layer to it by holding Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) and clicking between the layers.

Many adjustment layer properties can be manipulated programmatically via Photoshop's scripting interface or actions, allowing for batch processing and consistent application of effects.
