I'm creating a standard protocol for tricky composites so the studio can confidently sell composite shots. I want a reproducible checklist and priority order for matching direction, perspective and shadow. Tell me which of those three must be fixed first in practice, and the exact checks I should include in the brief to the retoucher.

Layers and Blending

Combine and integrate images or elements using layers and blending modes in Photoshop.

  1. 1

Open Photoshop and load your images into separate layers.

NoteSelect Tools > Photoshop > Load Files into Photoshop Layers.

  2. 2

In the Layers panel, select the layer you want to blend.

NoteLayers are arranged in a stack in the Layers panel.

  3. 3

From the Layers panel, choose an option from the Blend Mode pop-up menu.

NoteBlending modes determine how pixels in your image are affected.

  4. 4

Adjust the Opacity of the selected layer in the Layers panel.

NoteThis controls the transparency of the layer.

  5. 5

To blend edges, add a layer mask to the top layer.

Best practiceUse the button that is a square with a circle in it to create a mask.

  6. 6

Use painting tools on the layer mask to reveal or hide parts of the layer.

NotePainting with black hides, painting with white reveals.

  7. 7

To blend multiple layers automatically, select the layers in the Layers panel.

  8. 8

    Choose Edit > Auto-Blend Layers.

  9. 9

Save your composite image by choosing File > Save As.

Experiment with different blending modes and opacity settings to achieve your desired visual effect.

Photoshop actions and scripts can automate layer loading and blending mode application for repetitive tasks.

Because you rarely think 'I want the redaction tool'. You think 'I have to share this without leaking the client's details'. Start from the need, and the feature finds you.

Real. Every job here was drawn from what people in real roles were actually seen doing in Photoshop — not a feature checklist.

No. Each page gives you a ready prompt you can paste into an AI assistant, plus the plain steps to do it yourself. Start with either — the goal is the finished job, not the tool.
