Extend the vertical portrait to a horizontal spread so the background reads authentic: generatively fill matched floor and wall textures, preserve existing lighting direction and grain, hand-clone any repeating patterns that look synthetic, and export a print-ready 300 ppi TIFF with a note of areas that received synthetic fill.

Open your image by selecting File > Open.

  2. 2

Select the area you want to transform using a selection tool.

Best practiceFor expanding the canvas, use the Crop Tool to extend the image boundaries first.

  3. 3

Click the Generative Fill button in the Contextual Task Bar.

NoteYou can also access it from Edit > Generative Fill, or Select > All then Edit > Generative Fill.

  4. 4

Type a prompt describing the object or scene you want to generate in the text-entry field.

NoteYou can leave the prompt field empty to have Photoshop generate content based on the surrounding image.

  5. 5

    Click Generate.

  6. 6

Review the generated variations in the Properties panel.

  7. 7

Select your preferred variation from the options.

  8. 8

Generative Fill creates new content on a separate generative layer, allowing non-destructive edits.

Generative Fill functionality is integrated within Photoshop and is not directly exposed as a standalone API for external automation.

Use the Match Color adjustment under Image > Adjustments to blend the new sky with the original image. This helps match the overall tone and color.

Adjust colors right after replacing the sky, especially if the mood or time of day changes. This avoids a flat look and makes the new sky feel part of the scene.

Use layer masks and soft brushes to paint over edges. Also, tweak hue and saturation to match the existing sky and weather conditions.

Relying only on auto tools or ignoring the overall scene tone. Manual adjustments and careful masking produce better results.

A photographer replacing skies for a portfolio or a graphic designer creating a lively banner might do this to improve mood.

AI can suggest or generate color adjustments, but fine-tuning by hand often yields more natural results. AI is a tool, not a complete solution.

Matching sky colors involves color correction and blending, while vetting backgrounds checks for realism and consistency in the scene.
