I shot a gallery installation but the image is tightly framed and marketing needs room to place title text and curator notes for a printed card. Re-shooting isn’t possible before the deadline. Advise whether extending the background digitally risks looking fake at the card’s final size, which visual element to match first (horizon/vanishing point, grain/paint texture, or light fall-off), and a short method to generate a complementary wall texture that holds up at print size while respecting the original photo’s materiality.

How to do it

the tool · the steps · what to avoid
The tool
Generative Fill

Generative Fill uses AI to add, expand, or remove content from your images based on text prompts.

  1. 1

Open your image by selecting File > Open.

  2. 2

Select the area you want to transform using a selection tool.

Best practiceFor expanding the canvas, use the Crop Tool to extend the image boundaries first.

  3. 3

Click the Generative Fill button in the Contextual Task Bar.

NoteYou can also access it from Edit > Generative Fill, or Select > All then Edit > Generative Fill.

  4. 4

Type a prompt describing the object or scene you want to generate in the text-entry field.

NoteYou can leave the prompt field empty to have Photoshop generate content based on the surrounding image.

  5. 5

    Click Generate.

  6. 6

Review the generated variations in the Properties panel.

  7. 7

Select your preferred variation from the options.

  8. 8

Save your image by selecting File > Save As or File > Save a Copy.

Generative Fill creates new content on a separate generative layer, allowing non-destructive edits.

Generative Fill functionality is integrated within Photoshop and is not directly exposed as a standalone API for external automation.

The real tasks

1 of them
I photographed a wall installation but the framing is tight; marketing needs space for the title and catalogue notes by tomorrow and I can’t reshoot. I’m uneasy about extending the image and making the wall read fake. Tell me whether the expansion can be convincing at print size, which edge to match first, and a quick approach to generate a complementary texture that won't betray the original photograph.

Because you rarely think 'I want the redaction tool'. You think 'I have to share this without leaking the client's details'. Start from the need, and the feature finds you.

Real. Every job here was drawn from what people in real roles were actually seen doing in Photoshop — not a feature checklist.

No. Each page gives you a ready prompt you can paste into an AI assistant, plus the plain steps to do it yourself. Start with either — the goal is the finished job, not the tool.
