We're planning an evergreen hero that will reuse product cutouts over multiple lifestyle backgrounds for the seasonal push. I want the composites to look consistently real and reduce dependency on external art direction. Lay out a robust approach: what to capture on set to enable believable cast shadows and light wraps, the order to build the composite so it reads at glance, and a short validation test I can run on one image to approve the method for the whole batch.

Layers and Masks

Layers and Masks in Photoshop allow you to non-destructively hide or reveal parts of an image.

  1. 1

Select a layer or group in the Layers panel.

  2. 2

Click the Add layer mask button at the bottom of the Layers panel.

NoteA white layer mask thumbnail appears next to the selected layer.

  3. 3

Select the layer mask thumbnail in the Layers panel.

  4. 4

Select the Brush tool from the toolbar.

  5. 5

Set the foreground color to black to conceal content, or white to reveal content.

Best practiceTo view the actual layer mask in your document, press and hold the / Option (Mac) key and click on the layer mask thumbnail.

  6. 6

Paint on your image to hide or reveal areas.

CautionEnsure you have the layer mask thumbnail selected, not the layer thumbnail, before painting.

  7. 7

To invert the mask, select the layer mask and press Ctrl+I (Windows) or Command+I (Mac).

  8. 8

Save your work by going to File > Save or File > Save As.

Always ensure the correct layer or mask thumbnail is selected in the Layers panel before making adjustments.

Layer and mask operations can be automated using Photoshop actions or scripting for repetitive tasks like still prep pipelines.

Because you rarely think 'I want the redaction tool'. You think 'I have to share this without leaking the client's details'. Start from the need, and the feature finds you.

Real. Every job here was drawn from what people in real roles were actually seen doing in Photoshop — not a feature checklist.

No. Each page gives you a ready prompt you can paste into an AI assistant, plus the plain steps to do it yourself. Start with either — the goal is the finished job, not the tool.
