The Healing Brush Tool seamlessly blends imperfections by sampling pixels from one area and applying them to another, matching texture, lighting, and shading.
Select the layer containing imperfections in the Layers panel.
Select the Healing Brush Tool (J) from the toolbar.
NoteIt may be nested under the Spot Healing Brush Tool.
Click the brush sample in the tool options bar to set brush options.
Adjust Size, Hardness, and Pressure in the options bar.
Best practiceUse the right square bracket key (]) to enlarge the brush, and the left ([) to shrink it.
Hold Alt (Option on Mac) and click a desired sample area.
NoteThis sets the source pixels for healing.
Click or drag over the imperfection to apply the sampled texture.
RecommendationAdjust the brush size so it is slightly larger than the blemish for best results.
Repeat sampling and painting as needed for other imperfections.
Go to File > Save or File > Save As to commit your work.
For non-destructive editing, create a new empty layer above your image and set the Healing Brush's Sample option to 'Current & Below' or 'All Layers'.
The Healing Brush Tool's functionality is not directly exposed for automation via scripting or actions in a way that replicates its intelligent blending.
Use the Spot Healing Brush tool to click on dust spots or scratches. It's quick and effective for small blemishes. For larger issues, try the Clone Stamp tool to sample nearby areas and paint over imperfections.
Softening the background helps highlight the main features, especially if the scene is busy or distracting. Do this when the background draws attention away from the property or when the wall or floor surface has imperfections.
Use the Healing Brush or Spot Healing Brush to carefully click or drag over blemishes. These tools blend imperfections with surrounding pixels, making them less visible without altering the overall look.
Don’t overuse healing tools, which can create unnatural patches. Always zoom in to match textures and colors carefully. Save a copy before editing so you can revert if needed.
A real estate photo editor or marketing specialist often performs this task before listing photos go online to make spaces look their best.
