Across recent composites, where do our shadow failures cost us most — incorrect direction, soft/hard edge mismatch, or missing color bleed? Recommend a studio rule-set for shadow creation and one teaching exercise to get juniors making believable ground-contact shadows consistently.

Selection Tools

Photoshop's Selection Tools allow you to isolate specific areas of an image for editing, copying, or manipulation.

  1. 1

Open your image in Adobe Photoshop.

  2. 2

In the Tools panel, select a selection tool.

NoteCommon tools include the Object Selection tool, Quick Selection tool, Rectangular Marquee tool, and Lasso tool.

  3. 3

For the Object Selection tool, hover over an object to automatically highlight it, then click to select.

  4. 4

For the Quick Selection tool, drag over the area you want to select.

  5. 5

For the Rectangular Marquee tool, drag a rectangular selection onto the image.

  6. 6

For the Lasso tool, click and drag to outline the desired area.

NoteHold to select Magnetic Lasso or Polygonal Lasso for different drawing methods.

  7. 7

To add to an existing selection, click the Add to selection icon in the options bar or press Shift and drag.

  8. 8

To subtract from a selection, click the Subtract from selection icon or press Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) and drag.

  9. 9

Once the selection is complete, perform your desired edit, such as copying or applying an adjustment.

Best practiceFor precise pathing and the ability to correct errors, the Pen tool is often best, especially for complex shapes.

  10. 10

Save your work by going to File > Save or File > Save As.

Ensure you have the correct layer selected in the Layers panel before making your selection.

Photoshop's selection processes can be partially automated using actions or scripting for repetitive tasks, but often require human refinement.

Use the 'Frequency Separation' technique to separate skin texture from color. Then, carefully blur the color layer while keeping the texture layer sharp. This keeps the skin smooth but realistic.

A makeup artist or portrait retoucher often uses this method during bridal retouching to avoid plastic-looking skin.

Begin after you've made basic color correction and cleaned up minor blemishes. Focus on subtle skin smoothing during the final retouching stage.

For a bride’s close-up, retouching should happen once the overall image looks balanced, usually after sharpening the eyes and fixing distractions.

Adjust the opacity of the smoothing layer so pores still show through. Use a low-strength brush to repaint areas that look too plastic.

Overdoing the smoothing process can make the skin look fake and flat. Always compare with the original to keep it natural.

A portrait retoucher or beauty editor carefully smooths skin textures, often working closely with photographers or makeup artists.

AI can quickly even skin tone and remove minor blemishes but still needs human pin-point adjustments for natural pores and subtle imperfections.

Retouching focuses on skin and facial details, while removing backgrounds involves cropping or masking out unwanted elements.

A wedding photographer might ask for background removal during retouching to emphasize the bride.
