Reviewing our restored brochures, where do juniors diverge — over-cleaning, inconsistent grain restoration, or varied contrast adjustments? Identify the recurring mistake and prescribe one standard action or preset and one review metric so the archive's scans keep a consistent but honest look.

The tool
Healing Brush Tool

The Healing Brush Tool seamlessly blends imperfections by sampling pixels from one area and applying them to another, matching texture, lighting, and shading.

  1. 1

Select the layer containing imperfections in the Layers panel.

  2. 2

Select the Healing Brush Tool (J) from the toolbar.

NoteIt may be nested under the Spot Healing Brush Tool.

  3. 3

Click the brush sample in the tool options bar to set brush options.

  4. 4

Adjust Size, Hardness, and Pressure in the options bar.

Best practiceUse the right square bracket key (]) to enlarge the brush, and the left ([) to shrink it.

  5. 5

Hold Alt (Option on Mac) and click a desired sample area.

NoteThis sets the source pixels for healing.

  6. 6

Click or drag over the imperfection to apply the sampled texture.

RecommendationAdjust the brush size so it is slightly larger than the blemish for best results.

  7. 7

Repeat sampling and painting as needed for other imperfections.

  8. 8

Go to File > Save or File > Save As to commit your work.

For non-destructive editing, create a new empty layer above your image and set the Healing Brush's Sample option to 'Current & Below' or 'All Layers'.

The Healing Brush Tool's functionality is not directly exposed for automation via scripting or actions in a way that replicates its intelligent blending.

First, open your scanned image in Photoshop. Use the 'Levels' adjustment (Image > Adjustments > Levels) to increase contrast, making the lines darker and more defined. Then, create a new layer for cleanup. Use the 'Eraser' or 'Brush' tool to remove smudges or stray marks, ensuring your line art is crisp. This makes it easier to paint over later.

You should clean up your line art before coloring or adding details, especially if the lines are blurry or messy. For example, a comic artist prepares their sketches to make coloring smoother. Doing it early saves time and results in a more polished final image.

Practice using the 'Pen' tool to trace over your rough lines, making them cleaner. When cleaning existing lines, zoom in for precision, and use the 'Clone Stamp' or 'Healing Brush' to fix uneven spots. Watching tutorials on these tools can help you get smoother results faster.

A common mistake is over-smoothing or erasing too much, which can make lines look unnatural or lose their original character. For example, removing all variation makes the art look flat. Always keep some of the original line variation for a natural look.

A comic book artist or illustrator often cleans up line art to prepare for coloring. They do this before adding color layers to ensure lines are clear and precise, making the comic look professional.

AI tools can automatically enhance or straighten lines, saving time. However, they might not handle complex parts well and can distort details. You still need to review and manually correct important areas, especially for detailed line art.

People often confuse it with 'Enhance Eye Brightness' or 'Remove Unwanted Person,' but those focus on different goals. Cleaning line art is about crisping strokes, while those tasks aim to brighten or remove elements from photos.
