Across the last ten campaigns I notice recurring retouch problems: inconsistent scuff removal, over-smoothed spokesmod…
The Healing Brush Tool seamlessly blends imperfections by sampling pixels from one area and applying them to another, matching texture, lighting, and shading.
Select the layer containing imperfections in the Layers panel.
Select the Healing Brush Tool (J) from the toolbar.
NoteIt may be nested under the Spot Healing Brush Tool.
Click the brush sample in the tool options bar to set brush options.
Adjust Size, Hardness, and Pressure in the options bar.
Best practiceUse the right square bracket key (]) to enlarge the brush, and the left ([) to shrink it.
Hold Alt (Option on Mac) and click a desired sample area.
NoteThis sets the source pixels for healing.
Click or drag over the imperfection to apply the sampled texture.
RecommendationAdjust the brush size so it is slightly larger than the blemish for best results.
Repeat sampling and painting as needed for other imperfections.
Go to File > Save or File > Save As to commit your work.
For non-destructive editing, create a new empty layer above your image and set the Healing Brush's Sample option to 'Current & Below' or 'All Layers'.
The Healing Brush Tool's functionality is not directly exposed for automation via scripting or actions in a way that replicates its intelligent blending.
Use the Ruler tool to draw a line along the horizon, then go to Image > Image Rotation > Arbitrary. Photoshop will rotate the image to straighten the horizon. Do this after cropping to ensure accuracy.
Fix horizons early if the tilt is obvious to prevent distortion in other adjustments. For example, while preparing outdoor scenes for printing, ensure the horizon is level before retouching details.
Use guides or the grid (View > Show > Grid) to keep the horizon straight during cropping and leveling. This helps photographers and landscape editors maintain consistent straight horizons.
Relying solely on freehand rotation without guides can cause uneven corrections. For example, a photographer might rotate the image without checking the horizon, leading to skewed results.
A landscape photographer often corrects horizons before retouching content like removing distracting background elements or enhancing sky details.
AI tools like automatic straighten features can quickly correct minor tilt, but complex scenes or extreme angles need manual adjustment for precise results.
Correcting horizons is essential in restoring old photos to restore their original appearance, especially for archival images that need accurate perspective without distortions.
