We repeatedly over-restore or under-restore archival photos across client jobs and then argue over authenticity. Show me the common mistakes in my restorations, propose a simple decision rubric that balances repair and patina, and suggest one line to put in client briefs so expectations are clear before I begin.

The tool
Healing Brush Tool

The Healing Brush Tool seamlessly blends imperfections by sampling pixels from one area and applying them to another, matching texture, lighting, and shading.

  1. 1

Select the layer containing imperfections in the Layers panel.

  2. 2

Select the Healing Brush Tool (J) from the toolbar.

NoteIt may be nested under the Spot Healing Brush Tool.

  3. 3

Click the brush sample in the tool options bar to set brush options.

  4. 4

Adjust Size, Hardness, and Pressure in the options bar.

Best practiceUse the right square bracket key (]) to enlarge the brush, and the left ([) to shrink it.

  5. 5

Hold Alt (Option on Mac) and click a desired sample area.

NoteThis sets the source pixels for healing.

  6. 6

Click or drag over the imperfection to apply the sampled texture.

RecommendationAdjust the brush size so it is slightly larger than the blemish for best results.

  7. 7

Repeat sampling and painting as needed for other imperfections.

  8. 8

Go to File > Save or File > Save As to commit your work.

For non-destructive editing, create a new empty layer above your image and set the Healing Brush's Sample option to 'Current & Below' or 'All Layers'.

The Healing Brush Tool's functionality is not directly exposed for automation via scripting or actions in a way that replicates its intelligent blending.

Use the Dodge Tool or the White Brush on the teeth area with a low opacity. Carefully build up the whiteness, checking that it looks natural, especially for product shots where the model's friendliness matters.

Apply whitening when the model's smile appears dull or yellow, which can make the image seem less fresh and friendly. This enhances the overall appeal, especially in lifestyle or product photos.

Create a new layer, set it to Soft Light, and paint over the teeth with a white or light yellow brush. Use a low flow and work gradually. This keeps the whitening natural and adjustable.

Over-whitening can make teeth look fake or out of place, especially if the rest of the face isn’t adjusted. Always compare with the original to keep it realistic.

Fashion retouchers or beauty editors often do this in photoshoots to make models look more appealing and approachable in lifestyle campaigns.

AI can quickly brighten teeth in bulk, but for subtle, natural results, manual touch-up ensures the whiteness fits the overall look and prevents unnatural brightness.

Whitening focuses specifically on the teeth area using targeted tools like the Dodge or White Brush, whereas softening skin tone affects the face, and cleaning behind the subject removes distracting elements, each with different goals.
