We're prepping new hero art and a batch of partner thumbnails for next week's cross-channel test. I've already seen the team over-mask glossy finishes and then rebuild reflections in two different ways. Tell me the most defensible workflow that balances speed and accuracy for glossy products — how to set the photographer handoff, a masking approach that preserves speculars, and a simple QA gate so my ops team won't have to rebuild shadows later. I want something I can document and teach in a 30‑minute session.

  5. 5

Select the desired file and click Place.

  6. 6

To edit a Smart Object, double-click its thumbnail in the Layers panel.

NoteThis opens the Smart Object's content in a new window.

  7. 7

Make your desired edits to the content in the new window.

  8. 8

Choose File > Save to apply changes to the Smart Object.

Best practiceUsing Smart Objects from the start saves edits and time by preserving original image data.

  9. 9

Close the Smart Object window to return to your main document.

Smart Objects allow you to apply transformations, filters, and other edits non-destructively, always preserving the original image data.

Photoshop's scripting capabilities can automate the creation and placement of Smart Objects, especially for templated workflows.

Use the clone stamp and healing brush tools to carefully replace faded or damaged areas, keeping the label's original texture. This helps the label appear fresh while preserving its authenticity.

Begin before a client or marketing team finalizes the ad, ideally after capturing the shot. Retouching the label early ensures it looks pristine for the campaign.

Apply subtle adjustments, zoom in closely, and compare with the original. Use a low opacity brush to gently refine details, ensuring the label remains realistic.

Overdoing the brightness or contrast can make the label look artificial. Always check the color consistency and match it to the original for a natural look.

A retoucher or photo editor works on this task to ensure the product label looks attractive and professional in advertising images.

AI can assist with color matching or removing scratches, but manual touch-up is needed for fine details. AI can't fully replace the artist's eye for authenticity.

People often confuse this with 'Clean Behind Subject' since both involve careful retouching to remove distractions or imperfections from the product image.
