A rope pinned at both ends. Shake it at just the right speed and it settles into smooth swinging loops with still points between — a standing wave. Shake faster and more loops appear.
Still points and swinging loops
The blue still points never move — they're called nodes. Between them the rope swings hardest. The trick is finding the special speed where the far end goes still and the loops lock in clean.
Three ropes
Rope — normal. Heavy — the wave travels slower, so the same loops need a slower shake. Tight — a fast, light rope; shake faster. The rope sets the speed.
