Question 1

What does it mean to write concisely?

Accepted Answer

Concise writing gives the reader everything they need in as few words as that takes. It is not the same as writing the fewest words. "The black cat sat" is concise; "The cat that was black sat" says the same with extra words. But "Door. Baby." is too short: it has lost the request and the reason. Concise means no wasted words.

Question 2

How can I make my writing more concise?

Accepted Answer

Use the Cut Test on each word or phrase. Cover it and read the sentence again. If no meaning, tone or needed emphasis is lost, cut it. If only the length changes, swap in a short form: because for "due to the fact that", decide for "make a decision". If something is lost, keep it. Start with repeats, fillers and wordy phrases.

Question 3

Is "return back" correct?

Accepted Answer

It is not a grammar mistake, and everyone understands it, but it says back twice: return already means go back or give back. Write "Please return the book." The same goes for reply back, repeat again and repay back. Some verbs do need the extra word: come back and go back mean something different from come and go.

Question 4

What can I write instead of "due to the fact that"?

Accepted Answer

Write because: "The match stopped because it rained." Many long phrases have a short twin with the same meaning: "in order to" becomes to, "at this point in time" becomes now, "in the event that" becomes if, "in spite of the fact that" becomes although. The long forms are not grammar errors; they add weight without adding meaning.

Question 5

Is "in order to" wrong?

Accepted Answer

No. "In order to" is standard English, never wrong on its own. When the aim is fewer words, to does the same job: "I saved money to buy a bike." Keep the long form where it reads more clearly, especially in the negative: "in order not to wake the baby" is often easier to follow than "not to wake the baby".

Question 6

What is redundancy in writing, as in free gift or past history?

Accepted Answer

Redundancy is a word whose meaning is already inside its partner. A gift is always free, history is always past and facts are always true, so free gift, past history and true facts say one thing twice. Cut the extra word when the aim is fewer words. Keep it when it makes a live contrast: future plans, set against last year's plans.

Question 7

What are filler words, and should I cut them?

Accepted Answer

Fillers are words from speech that carry little on the page: "basically", "actually", "really", "just", "literally". "Basically, the plan is actually quite simple" becomes "The plan is simple." Cut a filler when nothing is lost. Keep the word when it does a job: "I thought it was easy; actually, it was hard" uses actually to mark a contrast.

Question 8

Should I avoid starting a sentence with "there is" or "it is"?

Accepted Answer

Often, because these openers push the real subject back. "There are many students who walk to school" becomes "Many students walk to school." "It is important to note that the shop closes at 5" becomes "The shop closes at 5." But keep there is when the sentence announces that something exists: "There is a snake in the garden."

Question 9

Is "the reason why ... is because" correct?

Accepted Answer

"The reason why I was late is because the bus broke down" says because twice. In formal writing, write "I was late because the bus broke down" or "The reason I was late is that the bus broke down." "The reason why" on its own is standard, and "the reason is because" is common and accepted in speech.

Question 10

Is it wrong to say "ATM machine" or "PIN number"?

Accepted Answer

Not wrong, but repeated: the M in ATM already stands for machine, and the N in PIN for number. People say both every day and are understood. When the aim is fewer words, write ATM and PIN. The same thinking trims completely finished, end result, close proximity and absolutely essential, where the first word adds nothing the second lacks.

Question 11

Is "kindly do the needful" correct?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It is standard in Indian office English, where it means please take the action that is needed. The question is clarity, not grammar: the needful does not say what the action is, and readers outside India may be puzzled. "Please send the signed form by Friday" names the task. Choose the wording by who will read it.

Question 12

What is the difference between a précis and a summary?

Accepted Answer

Both keep the main ideas, in order, in your own words, and drop examples and detail. A summary can vary in length and can focus on the points you need. A précis is a tighter exercise: it keeps the writer's view faithfully, adds no opinion of yours, meets a set word count and often carries a title naming the main idea.

Question 13

Why should I not say the same thing twice in a sentence?

Accepted Answer

Because the second saying adds words, not meaning. "It was raining and it was wet with rain" tells the reader one fact twice; "It was raining" tells it once. Look for an ending that repeats the start: "The sky was blue in colour" says colour twice, since blue is a colour. Say each idea once, then move on.

Question 14

Is "a tiny little ant" wrong?

Accepted Answer

It is not a grammar error, but tiny and little mean the same thing, so one of them can go: "a tiny ant". The same is true of "a big, huge elephant" and "cold and chilly". Keep two describing words when each adds something new: "a tiny red ant" tells the reader the size and the colour.

Question 15

Should I stop using the word "very"?

Accepted Answer

Not completely. "Very" and "really" often add nothing: "I just really want to go" says no more than "I want to go." A filler before every describing word weakens them all. But one "very" in the right place can matter: "The pan is very hot" is a warning worth keeping. Use it once, where the reader needs it.

Does this word earn its place?
