Chapter 19 — Hyphens & Dashes
Does this line join words, or break the sentence?
A hyphen joins words into one; a dash breaks a sentence open to add something: "twenty-one", "a well-known singer", and "We had one visitor — Nani" (an em dash). Ask whether the line joins, links a range, or breaks. Learn number words and ages, describing pairs before a noun, no hyphen after -ly, prefixes, the en dash for ranges, the em dash for asides, and the house styles that differ, for ages 5 to 19.
