Chapter 24 — Sentence Rhythm
How does a sentence sound?
Sentence rhythm is how a sentence sounds and moves when it is read aloud. Short sentences are quick and strong; long ones carry more and move slower; and the end of a sentence is its loudest place. Run the Read-Aloud Test - read it, find the breaths, hear the drag or the rush, find where the weight lands - then tune one thing and ask: better for what aim? Covers short and long sentences, mixing lengths, varying the openings, end focus and end weight, lists and the rule of three, repetition, alliteration and assonance, stress, pace, loose, periodic and cumulative sentences, fronting, inversion, balance and antithesis, speeches, poetry, Indian English oratory, cadence, revising for rhythm, exam essays and close reading, for ages 5 to 19.
