Chapter 28 — Voice & Style
Why do two writers sound different, even about the same rain?
A voice is a signature: the recurring choices that make one writer sound like themselves. "It rained. We ran. We got wet." and "The rain came down in long silver ropes" are both right, and they do not sound the same. Run the Voice Check - diction, pattern, imagery, persona - then name the voice in a phrase a stranger could use, and check it holds from the first line to the last. Voice persists; tone and register adapt to a reader, which is Chapter 22's work. Covers your own words, sentence habits, sense details, show don't tell, concrete and abstract words, connotation, point of view, figurative density, cliche, revision, writing in the style of a model, analysing and comparing published authors, a personal-essay voice and style in exams, for ages 5 to 19.
