Let children measure real objects! Use handspans to measure the table, footsteps to measure the room. Ask: "How many handspans?" This builds understanding before formal units.

Key Insight

Children must understand WHY we use the same unit. If you measure with pencils, then switch to blocks, the number changes! This teaches scientific discipline early.

Design Note: This chapter uses ONLY non-standard units. No rulers, no cm/m. The goal is understanding what measurement means before learning formal units.
