Why Ice Floats

Most solids sink in their own melted liquid — a chunk of frozen wax sinks in melted wax, frozen metal sinks in molten metal. Ice is the exception. The real explanation isn't "because it's cold" — cold rocks still sink. It's because water does something almost no other substance does when it freezes.
